When the boys exit the Flat Trans, they walk out into the Scorch, which is pretty much a barren wasteland with extreme heat. Phew? Meanwhile, Thomas tries telepathically to reach Teresa, but she isn't responding, which is pretty alarming. A few kids get their heads sliced off from metal ball things, but eventually, most of them reach the other side. It's a dark portal thingy, and bad stuff happens inside. That doesn't sound easy at all.Īnyway, the next morning, the kids all go through the Flat Trans. At 6 a.m., they'll need to go through a Flat Trans-whatever that is-and then enter the Scorch, where they'll need to reach the safe haven in exactly two weeks' time.Īctually, no. He's part of WICKED, and the scoop is that the boys are all about to be put into a trial. Eventually, he breaks his silence and tells the boys what's going on. He sits in a chair and reads a book, and he's also protected by a force field. Later, a random dude just appears in the central room of the dormitories. No one knows what's going on, and when the boys get back to the hallway, it turns out that the dead bodies are all gone. Then, when the boys get to Teresa's room, they find that she's gone a boy named Aris is in her room instead. On the way, they find a bunch of dead bodies hanging from the ceiling of the hallway. Crazy people outside-they're called Cranks-start screaming, so the boys all race into Teresa's room to see if she's okay. The Scorch Trials opens with the boys-we call them Gladers-all in their dormitories having a grand old confusing time, when a new something bad happens. Once they escaped, they were "rescued" by some sort of rebel group, and then they were brought to a safe haven where they could sleep, and stuff like that. Lots of shenanigans went down, but the boys eventually found out how to escape. Thomas, the protagonist, was one of the last ones to be put in the Maze, along with a girl named Teresa, the only girl, and that's when things got strange. Teresa, in response, tells Thomas that, in the end, “WICKED is good.Basically, people called Creators put a bunch of boys whose memories were erased into a Maze in Book One of The Maze Runner series. While conversing with a distrustful Teresa telepathically, Thomas makes a heart-rending decision and tells her to leave him alone for good. In the aftermath, he is once again separated from Teresa, and the others as well. When the groups finally make it to their appointed destination, Thomas makes a stand against WICKED. As a result of Teresa’s betrayal, old friendships are tested, and new allegiances are explored. Thomas does not know if he can ever trust Teresa again, even after she confesses that her action were all for show, and that she never meant Thomas any true harm. WICKED has tasked her with killing Thomas, which she is willing to do, and her actions cause a tremendous rift in their relationship. In a startling twist, Thomas is finally reunited with Teresa, but is betrayed by her. The Gladers come into contact with new people along the way, including Brenda and Jorge, two early-stage Cranks who guide them through the city and out to the mountains in exchange for receiving the cure at the safe haven. Amidst all of this, Thomas must determine what happened to Teresa. The Gladers know that they must comply, or face certain death.Īs they set out to cross the Scorch, the Gladers must again face deadly traps, Cranks infected with the Flare, and Group B, the group from which Aris was taken, whose task it is to bring about their destruction. There are no rules the Gladers must simple reach the safe haven, which is one hundred miles north of their starting point. Not only is he from another Maze group, he can communicate with Thomas telepathically, like Teresa.Ī representative from WICKED finally shows up and informs the Gladers that they are about to face the Scorch Trials, and that they will have two weeks to complete the trial. When they reach Teresa’s room, they find that a boy names Aris has been sleeping there, and that he has no idea who Teresa is. Worse, the rescuers from the precious day are all dead, their bodies hanging from the ceiling. The Gladers find that the fearsome Cranks are at each of the windows, attempting to get in. Moreover, just before Thomas wakes up, Teresa tells him telepathically that something is wrong. Though she was separated from the boys the previous night, Thomas now has no telepathic connection with her. Thomas awakes to discover that Teresa is nowhere to be found. However, Thomas and the others soon find that this is not the case. Though they have their misgivings, the teenagers are told they are safe now, and will be protected. Having been rescued from the Maze, Thomas and the others are placed in dorms for the night.
